According to Team Talk, Chelsea are interested in signing Manchester United transfer target Sam Johnstone to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga in the summer. Both clubs are allegedly interested in bringing in a new backup goalkeeper before the start of the new season.
The future of Arrizabalaga at Stamford Bridge is now unknown. In 2018, the Spaniard joined the Blues from Athletic Bilbao for about £72 million, marking him the world's most expensive goalkeeper.
However, Edouard Mendy, the Blues' first-choice goalkeeper, has supplanted the 27-year-old shot-stopper. In his most recent appearance, Arrizabalaga, who came off the bench, missed a penalty attempt in Chelsea's Carabao Cup final loss to Liverpool on penalties on Sunday. According to the same source, Kepa wants to leave Stamford Bridge in order to play regular first-team football. In the summer, the Blues hope to sign West Bromwich Albion's Sam Johnstone as a substitute. When his contract with West Brom expires at the end of the season, the 28-year-old shot-stopper might be available on a free transfer.
Johnstone has played in the English Premier League before. Despite West Brom's relegation to the Championship, the England international was a significant performer at the Hawthorns last season. Johnstone has three caps for the Three Lions and was a member of England's Euro 2020 squad. Chelsea, on the other hand, isn't the only team interested in landing Johnstone this summer. Manchester United are also interested in bringing in an academy graduate to replace Dean Henderson in the summer. At Chelsea, the 24-year-old shot-stopper is in a similar situation to Arrizabalaga, yearning for first-team action.
Henderson has lost his starting spot to David de Gea, who has been one of United's greatest performers this season. This season, the Spaniard has made the second-most saves in the Premier League (98).
